Festival of pain
Holy moly, I struggled through that race. A rash decision last night saw me insert gears and suspension to the Pegasus in the hope that I could stand on the podium. Alas this was not be. It was evident from the start of the first climb that I had no pace no legs and no chance against a quality field of National champs and representatives. It seems the tummybug that I had been struggling to shake had done nothing to assist my form. Well that and the sever lack of speed work to date. The peloton rode off into the distance while I woefully made my way up the long climb to summit road where I was hoping to find some solace in the technical singletrack. The race from this point had been decided for me and no positions changed hands. I had a blast carving the rocky single track and did manage to dial in some skills for the remaining race. It was obviously not my day today but I know next weekend there will be some pain laid down at the Hanmer Hammerhead. It is the start of a hopefully long and fun season and there is no need to start asking questions just yet. Time for a beer and an afternoon in the sun with the kiddies.

How often do you switch between gears and SS? How's the transition? I've been playing with variable gears lately, and while it is fun climbing impossible techie hills, I don't know if it'll be any faster for me.

I made the call because it turned the race from a long walk up a steep long climb to something that I could actually ride. The start was on a sealed rd where for 5 minutes or so and the speed was around 45-50kmph 30mph which would have been far too quick on my SS. I usually only run gears for parts of the summer race season. As soon as the final summer race finishes I strip the gears off. If the courses you ride have long steep climbs then gears would make it faster. I quite like the variation. 1x9 seems to work pretty well.
